Homemade sprinkles

I love making my own homemade sprinkles. While it is a project these will last you a long time and they are way way healthier for you. You can also make any color so that is a plus.
So here you have it, this homemade sprinkles recipe in case you didn’t get it on the last post. I used these sprinkles for the triple chocolate donuts as well as some other goodies.

I will be making these from now on with all sorts of different colors :-) These are way way better than the regular sprinkles you buy at the store which are waxy and have trans fats (hydrogenated fats).

Once you make this once, trust me, you won’t back to the nasty store bought ones!!

You can visit this other recipe for another color variation of these sprinkles

Enjoy!!

Here you can see the paste before and after dying. Pictures are a bit off since I made this at night!

Homemade sprinkles

Yield: 1 cup

Ingredients:

Directions:

Mix the first four ingredients until a semi-thick paste forms.
Divide the paste into as many portions as you have colors, tinting each batch with the color of your choice.

Put the colored paste into the piping bag and, on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper, pipe out long thin lines. Take care the lines do not touch each other.
Repeat the process with the remaining colors and allow the piped lines to dry for 24 hours.

They need to be dried out to the core for this to work.
After the time has elapsed, use a bench scraper or knife to scrape off the dried sprinkle lines and then to break/chop the lines into fairly long pieces for jimmies or quite short for sprinkles.

Store in an airtight container, indefinitely.

  1. I am so excited to try this! I saw that you are a dietitian; I’m majoring in Human Nutrition in the hopes of becoming a dietitian!

  2. Hi! I hope that you can mention that they may also buy all natural sprinkles at Baker’s Confetti, LLC. They artificial coloring definately provides a brighter hue, however, some people are trying to avoid artificial, even if it means sacraficing the vibrance. Thanks for your interest in sprinkles!

  13. Question..the natural food dyes have an expiration and will spoil quickly. If these are made with those dyes can they then be stored for future use or do they have to be used right away?

  14. Love these! That blue color is so pretty! Did you use India Tree food dye to make it?

  15. I made these with natural food dye powders. They were lovely for the first few days, but definitely can’t store “indefinitely” as stated. They lost a lot of their color and the flavor became  “vegetable-ey” like you can taste the ingredients in the dyes. I’m pretty disappointed because they took so much time and work for what was only useful for two batches of cupcakes. Unfortunately the rest have gone into the garbage.
